On September 1st, 2022 archaeological excavations started in the territory of “Metsamor” historical and archeological museum-reserve. The expedition hopes to find an old Urartian cuneiform inscription revealing the name of the ancient city. The excavations are being carried out by the Armenian-Polish expedition. 6 archaeologists from the “Service for the protection of historical environment and cultural museum-reservations” SNCO led by Professor, Doctor of Historical Sciences Ashot Piliposyan are participating from Armenia.
Archaeological excavations are mainly carried out in the territory of the wall and the two baths. During the excavations, various architectural details, walls, and floors have been discovered. There have also been opened the hypocaust floors of the baths, pipelines of the water supply system, reservoirs, and so on. It all gives us an insight into the structures and structural features of the period.
The employees of the “Service for the protection of the historical environment and cultural museum-reservations” SNCO have recorded a total of 34 cases of offenses against monuments and uncoordinated activities in the protection zones of the monuments all over the country from January till June of 2022.
Fragments of millennial history are now in the hands of the restoration laboratory specialist. Nowadays items found in 1989-1991 in the territory of the “Demer” burial ground, in village Nerkin Getashen, Gegharkunik region, are being cleaned, fixed and restored in the museum items restoration laboratory of the “Protection Service” SNCO. There are more than 500 items, such as pottery, bronze pendants, bracelets, as well as glass and seashell beads. The items are kept in the archaeological stock of the SNCO. 10 units of different objects found in fragments in the burial ground of Nerkin Getashen are now being restored. First they were washed and cleaned one by one, and then the work of restoration was started.
This is a cup from the Early Iron Age period, dating back to the 11th-9th century. It was found in the necropolis of “Sarukhan “Pali Tak”. This is one of the archeological artifacts kept in the archeology funds of the “Service for the protection of historical environment and cultural museum-reservations” SNCO.
Today, on August 17, 2022, the representatives of the «STARMUS FESTIVAL VI. 50 years on Mars-2022»- the International Festival of Astronomy, Science, Arts, and Knowledge visited “Zvartnots” historical-cultural museum-reserve.
During a working visit by the employees of the Monuments Preservation Department of the “Service for the protection of historical environment and cultural museum-reservations” SNCO and Gegharkunik Regional Service for Historical Environment Protection, it was found that some khachkars were upright in Geghamasar and Kakhakn communities of Gegharkunik province.
